Guten Appetit! Hearty German Fare at Allée Bleue

Following the success of their harvest feast earlier this year Allée Bleue in Franschhoek will introduce a weekly German food festival every Sunday from July.

Visitors to the estate will be tucking into a lavish buffet of authentic European-style sausages, cold cuts, mustards, breads and traditional side dishes, all washed down with ice cold Paulaner Weiss beer or lager. Live music by Benjamin Peaceful will set the mood, and children will be kept entertained with a jumping castle and movies while their parents kick back and relax.

On the hot buffet menu are a variety of sausages sourced from renowned German butchery and deli Raith Gourmet, paired with a selection of sweet mild mustards. Choose from weisswurst, literally a “white sausage” made from finely minced veal and bacon; bratwurst, good old fashioned Frankfurters, leberkäse, which translates to “liver cheese”, made from corned beef, pork, bacon and onions then baked like a loaf in a bread pan until it has a crunchy brown crust; and other traditional dishes like giant eisbein with crispy crackling served with sauerkraut, and wiener schnitzel with Lyonnaise potatoes.

Cold cuts will include bierschinken - ham sausage - and smoked servelat, with a variety of salads like tomato and onion, potato, and radish. Of course no German feast would be complete without gherkins, pickles, and freshly baked breads and rolls, from rye and pumpernickel, to dark brown laugenstangen with their crispy salty crust around soft, chewy dough, and brezel, or pretzel, with their unique knot-like shape.
To finish on a sweet or savoury note there will be a South African cheese board, light and buttery apple strudel with vanilla sauce, Kaiserschmarrn - a light, caramelised pancake made from a sweet batter, and seasonal fruit compote.

The German food festival runs every Sunday from 11.30am till 3pm and costs R145 a person, R45 for children less than 10 years old, and free for under-fives. During the winter months, from now until the end of September, it will take place in the Shiraz Room, and from October until May on the lawns in front of Kendall Cottage.

Allée Bleue is on R45 on the outskirts of the picturesque Franschhoek valley, close to the wine lands of Paarl and Stellenbosch. For reservations call (27) (21) 874 1886 or email info@alleebleue.com. For further information on Allée Bleue wine estate visit www.alleebleue.com
