There has been a lot of hype surrounding this new and improved estate’s facilities, which had piqued my curiosity. So when I received an invitation to a luncheon at the estate, it was definitely worth the drive out to see what all the fuss was about!
After entering through the security gate, one can only marvel at the impeccable drive to the buildings housing the various facilities. Lush rose bushes and carefully manicured lawns adorn the driveway. The first building is an art gallery housing the famous South African artist ‘Pierneef’ paintings.
The state of the art cellar facility is opposite the gallery with a very welcoming tasting room and here one can view the winery and maturation cellar through a wall of glass that separates the various sections.
There are ten wines available at the farm in two categories :- the La Motte Collection and Pierneef Collection. Of all the wines presented by Edmond Terblanché (wine maker) three of them stood out for me La Motte ‘Millennium’ 2007, La Motte ‘Pierneef’ Sauvignon blanc 2010 and La Motte MCC Brut 2007.
Without a doubt the highlight of the day was the ‘Hanneli R’ 2005 super premium wine made at the estate with an unusual blend of varieties: Shiraz, Grenaché, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cinsault. The price tag is at an astounding R800 per bottle, however it is worth it as investment wine!
Then it was time to eat at the Pierneef à La Motte restaurant, which has only been in operation for six weeks. As I have been in a position of opening many restaurants in my time, I may possibly be too critical! So the teething problems are evident, but on the whole the food is very tasty, well presented and the ambience good! The decor is fabulous with the most outstanding feature is the chandeliers in the main dining section …. Clever!
There is also an excellent selection of items to purchase in the shop adjacent to the restaurant which includes bread from their own bakery and other branded items.
A world-class experience awaits local and international guests at this winery. Take the journey!
Heaps of Swirls!
